Big Homies

The Big Homies Mentorship Program aims to:

  • Strengthen core values and principles among young men in the inner-city.
  • Establish positive relationships in the lives of "at-risk" youth
  • Act as a liaison between school teachers, administrators, and parents
  • Build each Little Homie's reading, writing, comprehension and decision-making skills
  • Nurture each Little Homie's self-esteem and self-confidence

is a community-based program providing positive mentorship and educational activities for youth in Venice and South Central Los Angeles. Started in July 2001 by community leader Vernon Andrews, Big Homies intervenes in the lives of underprivileged young men facing the staggering challenge of life in the inner city: absent fathers, domestic violence, gang violence, drug abuse, premature sex, school truancy and other obstacles to a healthy adulthood.

Through the program, young men and boys ages 7-16 (Little Homies) are linked with men from similar circumstances living positive lives (Big Homies) in a trust-based mentorship relationship. Children in the program are provided with free tutoring, problem resolution through one-on-one dialogues between child and mentor, and group trips to area attractions.

Big Homies mentors teach by example and communicate to each young man the importance of living a life of respect. Each child is valued and supported, and encouraged to grow into a healthy, positive young man.
